Senior Design II – Team 3 Visible Light Communication – video 1
Our project, Vi-Li, will use visible light as a communications medium in order to transmit data.
Visible Light Communication is a recently emerging wireless protocol that can have several benefits and specific uses over Wi-Fi.
In this video, we use a Beaglebone Black board to read ascii text from a terminal and output the binary conversion of the text to an LED panel. source

BeagleBone Black Wireless speeds development
When it comes to development boards, it’s not just about the Arduino and Raspberry Pi. The TI-friendly BeagleBone is there in the mix, too, fighting for your concentration
Which is a valid reason to showcase some developments around the BeagleBone Black single-board PC: there’s the new version and two new Capes from the BeagleBone team.
As well as the BeagleBone Black Wireless (down below), you’ll also find two brand new ‘cape’ add-on boards for the current BeagleBone Black.
BeagleBone Black Wireless
To start with the BeagleBone Black Wireless, which is essentially a BeagleBone Black with on-board 802.11 b/g/n 2.4GHz Wi-Fi plus Bluetooth. It’s following in the route of the Raspberry Pi 3 by building in Wi-Fi support to make simpler wireless communications.
Its engine is the Texas Instruments Sitara AM3358 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8
“Like the BeagleBone Black, the wireless preserves HDMI output, serial debug port, Computer USB interface, USB 2.0 host, reset and power switches, and adds two extra status Led lights for WiFi and Bluetooth,” describes BeagleBone.org.
“Likewise preserved is the 4GB of on board eMMC memory with Debian Linux preinstalled, which allows the BeagleBone Wireless to boot in nearly 10 seconds and have you developing through the web browser in only Five min’s by means of only a single USB cable.”
You will find the particulars of the board by expanding the photo in this article, and a data sheet is right here for download.
Note that it marks the introduction of the Octavo OSD3358 SiP, integrating BeagleBone functionality into one BGA package.

Considering we’re raving about bank card-sizes peices of kit, space needs to be made for new features. It is meaning this particular BeagleBone has lost its 10/100 Ethernet port, producing space for a TI WL1835 WiLink wi-fi interface.

Not forgetting the the two new capes…
Wireless Cape addon
Remember the new Wireless Cape takes BeagleBone Black above the features of BeagleBone Black Wireless, suggests Steve Bush in his news piece about the release. It’s using Texas Instruments WiLink 8 (WL1837) industrial dual-band (2.4GHz & 5GHz), 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Smart (also called Bluetooth LE), which equally has Zigbee as well as NFC.
The cape comes with Debian Linux Distro pre-installed and 4Gbyte of on-ship eMMC Flash memory. “Creative designers might be developing employing their web browser in lower than Five min’s by using just a single USB cable,” said Farnell.
Display cape addon
Notice there’s another Display cape addon conveniently obtainable. It contains connections for a 4.3″ colour touchscreen an LED backlight and capacitive overlay “for a handset-like interface”.
The cape focuses on interactive projects, embedded systems and separate set ups.
Price is around ￡55 for the BeagleBone Black Wireless, ￡35 for the display cape addon and ￡44 for the wireless cape addon .
